Take Care of Your Sportswear: How to Dry and Store It to Keep Its Shape

Your sportswear works hard for you — whether you’re running in the morning heat, practicing yoga, or hitting the gym after work. The technical fabrics that wick away sweat, stretch with your movements, and keep their shape need a bit of care to stay in top condition. With the right drying and storage habits, you can make your gear last longer, stay fresh, and look as good as new. Here’s how to take care of your sportswear in India’s warm and often humid climate.
Skip the Dryer – Air Drying Is Best
It might be tempting to toss your workout clothes into the dryer for a quick fix, but high heat can damage elastic fibers like spandex and lycra. These materials give your clothes their stretch and shape, and once they’re damaged, your clothes can become loose and less supportive.
Instead, air dry your sportswear. Hang it on a drying rack or hanger in a well-ventilated area. In India’s climate, outdoor drying is common, but avoid direct sunlight — strong UV rays can fade colors and weaken fabrics. Choose a shaded balcony or terrace spot where air can circulate freely.
Before hanging, gently shake out your clothes to help them keep their shape and reduce wrinkles. This small step can make a big difference.
Don’t Leave Damp Clothes in Your Bag
After a workout, it’s easy to forget your sweaty clothes in your gym bag or car. But moisture and warmth create the perfect environment for bacteria and unpleasant odors. If you can’t wash your clothes right away, at least hang them up to air out as soon as possible.
If you exercise regularly, consider keeping a small drying rack or hooks in your bathroom or laundry area. This allows your clothes to dry partially before washing and prevents mildew from forming — especially important during the monsoon season when humidity is high.
Store Your Sportswear in a Cool, Dry Place
Once your clothes are completely dry, store them in a place that allows air to circulate. Avoid sealed plastic bags or airtight drawers, as trapped moisture can lead to musty smells or even mold. A breathable cotton storage bag or an open shelf works well.
Fold your clothes neatly, but don’t press them too tightly — especially items with elastic waistbands or padding, like sports bras or cycling shorts. If possible, lay padded items flat to help them keep their shape.
Be Careful with Fabric Softeners and Ironing
While washing isn’t the main focus here, it directly affects how your clothes dry and last. Fabric softeners can coat the fibers, reducing their ability to wick away sweat and making them less breathable. Use a mild detergent designed for activewear instead.
Avoid ironing your sportswear. Most performance fabrics are heat-sensitive, and the iron’s temperature can melt or deform them. If your clothes look wrinkled, they’ll usually smooth out once you wear them.
Keep Your Gear Fresh Between Workouts
Even with proper drying, sportswear can develop a lingering odor over time, especially in humid weather. To freshen it up, hang it outside in the shade for a few hours. You can also lightly spray a mix of water and white vinegar (one part vinegar to three parts water) to neutralize odors — just test it on a small area first.
If you have space, store your sportswear separately from your everyday clothes. This helps prevent any residual odors from spreading and makes it easier to find your workout gear when you need it.
Preserve the Shape – and the Motivation
Taking good care of your sportswear doesn’t just make it last longer — it also keeps you feeling confident and comfortable during your workouts. When your clothes fit well, stay fresh, and look great, you’re more likely to stay motivated and enjoy your fitness routine.
With a little extra attention to drying and storage, your sportswear will stay in shape — just like you.
